Why trivia can help facts stick
A good trivia question does more than check what you know. It makes your brain search for an answer, gives the attempt a consequence, and creates a moment where feedback matters.

Remembering is an action
Reading a fact can feel familiar without making it easy to recall later. Trivia asks for something more active: you see a cue, search your memory, compare possibilities, and commit to an answer. That act of trying to retrieve information is often called retrieval practice.
Research on the “testing effect” has repeatedly examined how attempting to retrieve information can support later retention. A widely discussed 2011 study by Karpicke and Blunt reported stronger learning after retrieval practice than after an elaborative concept-mapping activity in its experiment. Later work has replicated benefits while also debating the size of the effect and details of the original comparison. The sensible conclusion is not that every quiz magically teaches everything; it is that well-designed retrieval can be part of learning.
Feedback turns an attempt into information
A guess by itself can reinforce confusion. The useful moment comes immediately afterward: Which answer was correct? Why? What detail distinguishes it from the tempting wrong choice?

Mixed questions force the brain to identify the subject and retrieve the relevant knowledge before selecting an answer. That extra decision can make the practice more demanding—and more interesting.

Where trivia has limits
Multiple-choice questions can sometimes be answered through elimination or recognition rather than complete recall. A correct answer also does not prove deep understanding. Complex skills need explanation, practice, application, and often expert guidance.
